Fitness for Work & Absence Management

Employee absence can result in significant cost, disruption and pressure for organisations, particularly where absence becomes ongoing or there is uncertainty around an employee’s ability to return to work safely.

Genesis supports employers with practical occupational health advice when an employee is absent from work, returning after illness, injury or surgery, or where health may be affecting attendance, performance, safety or their ability to carry out their role. This support can be useful for day one absence, short-term absence, long-term absence, repeated sickness absence, phased returns and fitness-for-work concerns.

Early referral can support the swift identification and management of health concerns, helping employers make informed and fair decisions while supporting employees back into the workplace where appropriate. Our occupational health team can assess the employee by telephone, video or face-to-face appointment, depending on the circumstances of the referral.

Following assessment, we provide a clear occupational health report to help managers understand how health may be affecting work, whether adjustments may be required, and what steps could support a safe and appropriate return to work. This may include advice on fitness for work, likely timescales, phased returns, workplace adjustments, temporary or ongoing restrictions, further support and whether additional review may be required.

Pre-Placement Screening

Pre-placement / pre-employment health screening to assess overall health and fitness for the proposed role. Candidates complete a secure electronic health questionnaire in their own time, which is then triaged by our occupational health team. Where required, a nurse follow up is arranged by telephone, video or face to face. A report outlining suitability for the role and any recommended workplace adjustments.

Health Surveillance

Risk-based occupational health surveillance for employees exposed to workplace hazards such as noise, vibration, respiratory risks, skin irritants, dusts, fumes or other occupational exposures. Health surveillance may include audiometry, spirometry, skin surveillance and HAVS assessments, with recall programmes guided by exposure risk, workplace risk assessments and occupational health recommendations.

Counselling

Confidential workplace counselling for employees who need timely mental health and wellbeing support. As an alternative or addition to a traditional Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), counselling can be arranged by video, telephone or face-to-face appointment, with individual sessions, group support and ongoing retainer packages available for employers.

Vaccinations

Workplace vaccination and occupational immunisation support for employers, including seasonal flu vaccination programmes and winter flu clinics for employees. Vaccinations may include influenza, diphtheria, tetanus and polio, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and typhoid, with advice on suitable workplace policies, procedures and role-based vaccination requirements.

Physiotherapy

Workplace physiotherapy and musculoskeletal support through face-to-face management referrals, remote online appointments. Workplace physiotherapy assessments and reports can outline movement, physical restrictions, recovery advice and recommendations to support employees to remain in work or return to work safely.

Drug & Alcohol Testing

Legally defensible workplace drug and alcohol testing for employers, including pre-employment, random, routine, post-incident, reasonable suspicion and percentage-of-workforce screening. Testing can support safety-critical roles and workplace substance misuse policies, using strict chain of custody procedures to protect sample integrity and employee confidentiality. We also support appropriate employers and employees where drug or alcohol dependency or misuse is disclosed.

Safety Critical Medicals

Role-specific safety-critical medicals and screening for employees working in safety-critical roles and high-risk industries. Full safety-critical medical assessments include drug and alcohol testing and a report confirming fitness for the role. Shorter screening appointments are also available, with referral to a fuller medical assessment where further review is required.

Wellbeing Medicals

Workplace wellbeing medicals, also known as Genesis OHS executive wellbeing medicals are employee health checks for employers wanting proactive workforce wellbeing support. Appointments take around 30 minutes and help identify risk factors linked to heart disease, stroke and Type 2 diabetes, with each employee receiving a personal report, practical recommendations and supporting wellbeing information.

Isocyanate Testing

Isocyanate biological monitoring through urine sample collection and laboratory analysis for employees exposed to isocyanates. Testing helps employers check whether COSHH controls, PPE/RPE, training and working practices are effective, supporting early action to prevent occupational asthma and work-related ill health.

Ill Health Retirement Medical Assessment

Ill health retirement medical assessments are completed by an Occupational Health Physician following a management referral. The assessment considers an employee’s suitability for ill health retirement against the relevant pension scheme criteria. Appointments may be face to face, telephone, video call or desktop review, with a report and certification provided.

Capability Medical Assessments

Capability medical assessments are completed by an occupational health physician following a management referral. The assessment considers an employee’s capability for their specific job role, based on their health and medical circumstances. Appointments may be face to face, telephone, video call or desktop review.
