Why Undertake an Occupational Health Qualification?

Why Undertake an Occupational Health Qualification?

Occupational health plays a vital role in helping organisations protect employee health, manage workplace risk and support people to remain fit, safe and well at work. As more employers recognise the value of occupational health, there is a growing need for competent, confident and well-trained occupational health professionals.

For Nurses and Technicians working in or looking to move into occupational health, undertaking a recognised qualification can be a valuable step in developing your career, strengthening your competence and opening up new opportunities.

Supporting your career progression

Completing an occupational health qualification can help demonstrate that you have developed the knowledge, skills and understanding required to work effectively within the occupational health environment.

For some learners, this may support progression within their current organisation. For others, it may help open doors to new roles, increased responsibility or opportunities in different sectors.

Depending on your organisation’s structure, a qualification may support progression into roles such as Occupational Health Technician, Occupational Health Nurse, Senior Technician, Occupational Health Advisor, Team Lead, Trainer, Manager or wider workplace health and wellbeing roles.

While career pathways and salaries vary between employers, holding a recognised qualification can help strengthen your professional profile and may support future salary progression or promotion opportunities.

Demonstrating competence

In occupational health, competence matters. Employers, clients and contractors want assurance that individuals delivering occupational health services understand workplace health risks, professional responsibilities, confidentiality, reporting, health surveillance and fitness for work considerations.

A recognised qualification provides structured learning and evidence of competence. It shows that you are not just gaining experience on the job, but that your knowledge has been developed and assessed against a formal standard.

Helping employers strengthen their workforce

For employers, investing in occupational health training can bring significant benefits. Having qualified Occupational Health Nurses or Technicians within the organisation helps demonstrate that the business is taking employee health, workplace risk and professional competence seriously.

This can support service quality, improve consistency, strengthen internal capability and give clients greater confidence in the occupational health support being delivered.

For organisations that provide occupational health services, having appropriately trained and qualified staff may also support tender submissions, client assurance, contract requirements and the ability to bid for more specialist or higher-value work.

In many sectors, competence is a key part of winning and retaining business. Training your team can help evidence that competence.

Men’s Health Week 2026: Supporting Men’s Health, Wellbeing and Work

Men’s Health Week 2026 runs from 15 to 21 June, providing an important opportunity for employers to open up practical conversations around men’s physical health, mental wellbeing and access to support. This year’s focus from the Men’s Health Forum is around men and pharmacy, looking at how men engage with healthcare advice and how everyday access points can be used more effectively to improve health outcomes. In the workplace, the message is equally important: men should feel able to ask questions, seek help early and access support before health concerns become more serious. For employers, Men’s Health Week is not just a calendar awareness event. It is a timely reminder that wellbeing, absence, fitness for work, mental health and the way work is designed are all connected. At Genesis OHS, we support organisations across the UK with practical occupational health, wellbeing, health and safety, environmental health and training services. Our approach is work-focused, confidential and designed to help both employees and employers make informed decisions.

Why Men’s Health Matters in the Workplace

Many men delay seeking help for physical or mental health concerns. In a workplace setting, this can show up in different ways: repeated absence, reduced performance, fatigue, stress, musculoskeletal discomfort, low mood, reluctance to speak up, or simply “getting on with it” until the issue becomes harder to manage. Men’s Health Week creates a useful opportunity to pause and ask:

  • Are employees able to access support early?
  • Do managers know how to respond when someone is struggling?
  • Are health conversations normalised within the workplace?
  • Are the psychosocial risks of work being considered, not just the physical risks?

Workplace wellbeing is not only about encouraging people to drink more water, walk more steps or attend a one-off awareness session. Those things can be helpful, but they sit within a wider picture. True workplace wellbeing also considers the demands of work, the level of control employees have, the support available, workplace relationships, role clarity and how change is communicated and managed. These psychosocial aspects of work can have a direct impact on mental health, stress, attendance, engagement and safety.

Workplace Wellbeing Days: A Practical Way to Start the Conversation

One of the most effective ways to bring Men’s Health Week to life is through an onsite workplace wellbeing day. Genesis OHS can support employers by arranging for an Occupational Health Technician or Occupational Health Nurse to attend site and provide a practical, approachable wellbeing service for employees. This can be tailored to suit the workforce, sector and risk profile of the organisation. A workplace wellbeing day may include support such as:

  • Blood pressure checks
  • Height, weight and BMI checks
  • General health screening
  • Lifestyle and wellbeing conversations
  • Fitness and activity guidanc
  • Diet and general health advice
  • Time to Talk sessions
  • Signposting to appropriate support
  • Occupational health guidance where required

These sessions can help employees take small, positive steps towards better health. They also give employers an opportunity to demonstrate visible commitment to employee wellbeing in a way that feels practical, confidential and accessible. For male employees in particular, a workplace wellbeing day can reduce some of the barriers to asking for help. Instead of having to make a separate appointment or raise a concern formally, employees can access a supportive conversation during the working day.

Beyond Awareness: Occupational Health Support That Helps Employers Act

Awareness campaigns are valuable, but they are most effective when they are linked to practical support. Genesis OHS provides a range of occupational health and wellbeing services that can help employers manage both individual cases and wider workforce trends. This includes:

  • Pre-placement screening
  • Fitness for work and management referrals
  • Short and long-term absence support
  • Return-to-work and adjustment advice
  • Counselling
  • Physiotherapy
  • Training and awareness sessions
  • Health surveillance programmes
  • Safety-critical medicals
  • Drug and alcohol testing
  • Training and awareness sessions

This means employers can move from simply recognising an issue to taking appropriate action. For example, if an employee is struggling with stress, fatigue or anxiety, a management referral may help clarify fitness for work, identify suitable adjustments and support a safe and sustainable return to work. If musculoskeletal discomfort is affecting attendance or performance, physiotherapy support may help address the issue early. If a team is facing pressure, conflict or change, training and psychosocial risk conversations can help managers understand where support or workplace controls may be needed.

Mental Health Training: Building Confidence Across the Workforce

Managers and employees are often willing to help but may not always know what to say, what to look for or where the boundaries are. Genesis OHS provides workplace mental health and wellbeing training designed to improve awareness, reduce stigma and give delegates the confidence to respond appropriately. Our Mental Health & Wellbeing Training is a 3-hour course for up to 12 delegates. It aims to help remove stigma and fear around mental health issues, supporting delegates to understand different mental health issues, identify people experiencing distress, assist and signpost appropriately, and promote good mental health. We also provide Mental Health Self Care Training, a half-day course that supports delegates to understand self-care, resilience, positive thinking, mindfulness, self-awareness and practical approaches to maintaining wellbeing. These sessions are particularly valuable when combined with wider occupational health support, wellbeing days or internal wellbeing campaigns.

The Psychosocial Side of Work

A strong wellbeing strategy does not place all responsibility on the individual. It also considers how work itself can affect health. Psychosocial risks can include excessive demands, lack of control, poor communication, unclear roles, workplace conflict, limited support or poorly managed change. These factors can influence stress, mental health, relationships, productivity and absence. For employers, this means the question should not only be, “How do we help employees cope better?”
It should also be, “Is there anything about the work, culture or management approach that is contributing to the problem?” This is where an integrated approach to occupational health, health and safety, training and wellbeing can be especially valuable. By considering both individual support and workplace risk factors, employers can make better decisions and build healthier, more resilient teams.

Men’s Health Week is a valuable starting point, but the real impact comes from what happens next. By creating accessible routes into support, encouraging early conversations and addressing the wider psychosocial aspects of work, employers can help their people stay healthier, safer and more supported.

Helping Employers Keep Communities Moving: Occupational Health Pre-Placement Screening Across the UK

When a long-standing local bus provider could no longer continue operating in Dumfries and Galloway, Houston’s Coaches stepped in to help keep essential services running for the local community. This expansion in service provision created a significant recruitment need, requiring the rapid onboarding of a large number of new drivers.

Here at Genesis OHS, we had already been supporting Houston’s Coaches with pre-placement screening and other occupational health services, so when demand increased, we were able to respond quickly. Rather than introducing a new process, we supported a higher volume of requests through a service that was already in place and working well. This meant Houston’s Coaches could continue moving recruitment forward at pace, with the reassurance of an established, clinically led process.

A practical and responsive approach

Our role was to support Houston’s Coaches with efficient onboarding while ensuring our occupational health team appropriately reviewed health considerations for roles with passenger and public responsibility. Candidates were able to complete health questionnaires digitally, in their own time, making the process straightforward, accessible and easy to manage. Our occupational health nurses then promptly reviewed each questionnaire.

When follow-up was needed, our team arranged this quickly through our bespoke OH portal, with appointments delivered by telephone or video consultation. Where a face-to-face assessment was more appropriate, we arranged that too. This gave Houston’s Coaches confidence that the process stayed consistent, responsive and professionally managed during a period of rapid growth.

Lisa McMurdo, Occupational Health Nurse at Genesis OHS, said:
“As pre-placement screening was already in place, we were able to respond quickly when Houston’s Coaches needed support with a higher volume of requests. That meant recruitment could keep moving, with the reassurance that the right clinical oversight was there from the start.”

Why pre-placement screening matters#
Pre-placement screening helps employers make informed, fair and role-specific decisions before someone starts work. It reduces risk and ensures qualified clinicians appropriately review health considerations. It helps organisations determine whether an individual is fit for the role, identify any adjustments they need, decide whether further assessment is needed, and reduce the risk of problems later. It also gives managers confidence that qualified clinicians properly review health matters and provide the appropriate level of oversight throughout the process.

Leah Carpenter at Houston’s Coaches said:
“At Houston’s Coaches, safety, reliability and professionalism are at the heart of everything we do. Following the award of a large new contract, our business entered a period of significant growth, making it essential that our recruitment process remained robust and consistent. Pre-placement screening became a key part of ensuring we hired responsibly.

Working with Genesis OHS gave us confidence as we brought new people into the business at pace. Their pre-placement screening allowed us to make informed hiring decisions, ensuring candidates met the required standards and were fit for the role before getting behind the wheel.”

Erin Wilson, Head of Business at Genesis OHS, said:
“Using Occupational Health support for onboarding helps take away that grey area for employers. Internal teams should not be left to make clinical judgements or determine whether further assessment is needed. The role of our OH team here at Genesis OHS is to review the information properly, identify where follow-up is required, and give clear, practical recommendations so managers can keep recruitment moving with confidence.”

Support across the UK
While this testimonial highlights our work with a local coach operator, Genesis OHS supports employers across the UK with pre-placement screening. Whether you are recruiting drivers, engineers, warehouse staff, carers, office-based employees or people in other roles, we can provide a responsive service tailored to the role and the needs of your business.

Pre-placement screening is just one part of the wider support that Genesis OHS can provide, alongside services such as health surveillance, drug and alcohol testing, face-fit testing, training, toolbox talks, and ad hoc or retained Health & Safety support.

If your organisation is recruiting at pace, taking on new contracts, or seeking a more consistent and clinically led approach to pre-placement screening, please get in touch with us to find out how Genesis OHS can support your business.

Wellbeing in Action: Our Health & Wellbeing Plans for 2026

Walking the Talk: Our Health & Wellbeing Plans for 2026
By Erin Wilson, Head of Business, Genesis Occupational Health & Safety

At Genesis Occupational Health & Safety, we support organisations every day to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of their people. As we move through 2026, it feels important to share how we’re applying those same principles internally, not just through policies or guidance, but in a way that is practical, inclusive and sustainable for real working lives.

This year, we’ve taken a more focused approach to wellbeing. Rather than running lots of separate initiatives, we’ve committed to one clear priority: movement. Specifically, improving mobility, fitness and everyday activity in a way that fits around busy schedules, travel, and varied roles.

Our 2026 Wellbeing Focus: Movement That Fits Real Working Life

Like many of our clients, our team spends a significant amount of time travelling, driving between sites, attending meetings and working at desks. Even with the best intentions, this can mean that movement and physical activity quietly drop down the priority list.

So, for 2026, our internal health and wellbeing challenge sees each of us taking on the goal of “walking” the length of the UK from John o’ Groats to Land’s End as many times as we can throughout the year.

For some, completing the journey there and back once will be a considerable achievement. Others may manage it two, three, five times or more. The emphasis isn’t on competition or pace, it’s on consistency, awareness and participation, whatever that looks like for each individual. Every mile counts.

To bring a bit of variety and a healthy level of challenge into the mix, Emma Eden, one of our Directors, is taking on the full UK coastal walking route and Stephen Little, one of our Health & Safety Advisors, is canoeing the entire UK coastline.

Making Wellbeing Practical, Not Perfect

Alongside the challenge itself, we’re focusing on the small, everyday habits that support long-term wellbeing. Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing things like:

  • podcasts and music we’re listening to while out walking
  • Food choices that help refuel busy working days
  • simple stretches and mobility habits that help prevent aches, fatigue and injury

This approach reflects our wider philosophy at Genesis OHS wellbeing works best when it’s realistic, inclusive and built into everyday working life, rather than feeling like another thing to “keep up with”.

What This Means for Our Clients

One of the reasons I wanted to share our internal plans is that we regularly speak to organisations that want to support employee wellbeing, but aren’t always sure where to start or how to make it meaningful rather than tokenistic.

At Genesis Occupational Health & Safety, we work with organisations across the UK to design and deliver practical wellbeing initiatives that genuinely support people at work. This includes:

  • Health Awareness Days
Covering topics such as mental health, musculoskeletal health, fatigue, stress, menopause, respiratory health and lifestyle-related risks.

  • Executive Wellbeing Medicals
Combining Occupational Health input, Health & Safety awareness and practical, engaging sessions tailored to your workforce.

  • Workplace Challenges
Including walking challenges, movement-based initiatives and behaviour-led campaigns that encourage sustainable change.

  • Occupational Health Services
From health surveillance and screening to management referrals, pre-employment assessments, case management and fitness-for-work advice.

  • Health & Safety Services
Consultancy including annual retainers, supporting safe systems of work, risk management and competence, while integrating wellbeing into everyday safety culture.

  • Training
A wide range of core and bespoke training, an SQA-approved training centre, including SQA-accredited Occupational Health qualifications.

Whether you’re looking for a one-off awareness day, a themed wellbeing initiative, or a longer-term programme aligned to your organisational goals, Genesis OHS will work with you to ensure it is proportionate, compliant and effective.

Practising What We Deliver

For us, wellbeing isn’t a bolt-on or a tick-box exercise. It’s part of how we think about sustainable work, resilience and performance both internally and for the organisations we support.

By committing to our own wellbeing focus in 2026, we’re holding ourselves to the same standards we encourage others to adopt: realistic goals, consistency and a long-term view of health.

If you’d like to discuss how Genesis Occupational Health & Safety can support your organisation with wellbeing initiatives, Occupational Health, Health & Safety or training in 2026, we’d be very happy to have a conversation.

Sometimes, meaningful change really does start with putting one foot in front of the other.

Genesis OHS attends charity fund-raising event

Team Genesis taking part in the bigmoose 24-hour spin challenge in Cardiff to raise money for mental health charity bigmoose.

Here’s Simon Bone, our Office Manager, with his take on Team Genesis’s adventure at the bigmoose 24-hour spin challenge – from 340 miles on the road to 24 hours on the bike, pancakes, playlists and everything in between. Over to Simon…

Mental health charity “bigmoose” had a mission for this event: to raise £ 1 million. The plan was to have riders pedalling for 24 hours. The funds raised will be going towards helping provide life-saving therapy for people struggling with their mental health. On 29 November, 100 teams of 10 people, riding non-stop on spin bikes, powering change together and funding fast and effective therapy for people who need it most.

bigmoose Project 1 million 2.0

The event took place at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff, Wales. It was just a short 340-mile, 6-hour drive from our base in Dumfries, Scotland. The majority of our team headed down the night before to be fresh and ready to get our bike spinning at 12 noon. Erin and I decided to travel on the day of and planned to meet up with the team in plenty of time to have a little rest before taking our turns on the bike. The journey went relatively straightforward: good music, minimal traffic, a spot of damp weather, and a pleasant little stop-off at Holmes Sweet Home for some of their lovely pancakes while the electric car charged up.

Before we set off on the second leg of our trip, we couldn’t help but be doubled over laughing as Erin tried to unplug the wrong car from its charger, whilst they were sitting in it.

After a long drive, and a custom-made 2000s A-Z Spotify playlist later, we arrived in Cardiff. The venue, meanwhile, was already busy, and we found ourselves in a highly energetic atmosphere.

The real challenge begins

Ten rows or 10 bikes filled a large area, all set up in front of a massive screen. The tunes were pumping, the spin instructor was keeping everyone entertained, and spectators were cheering the cyclists on. Periodically, we would be given updates on the total amount raised, and inspirational and emotional stories would be played on the big screen, reminding us all of the reason we were there and the impact our efforts were having.

Time ticked on, and some of us went to sleep while the others worked on through the night, keeping the bike spinning. The team switched over in the early hours of Sunday morning, and we powered on, though. We all reunited for the final few hours and powered on through to the end, where Scott, one of our Directors, completed the final stretch.

We’d done it! Our team completed the 24 hours and raised some money for a worthy cause. We had a great time, spoke to some lovely people, and did our part to help people get the treatment they need. We just had the return journey left, and we all stopped off for a lovely team meal.

Go Team Genesis!

Genesis OHS Wellbeing Day 2025 at St Mary’s Loch

Genesis OHS team enjoying Wellbeing Day 2025 at St Mary’s Loch

We ended last week on an absolute high with our Genesis OHS Wellbeing Day 2025 at St Mary’s Loch, rounding off another busy 12 months with one of our favourite traditions. It’s a highlight in the Team Genesis calendar, a chance to step away from the whirlwind of daily work, recharge, and spend real quality time together.

This year, we embarked on a new adventure, journeying to the picturesque St Mary’s Loch. The stunning views and serene surroundings provided the perfect backdrop for a day of relaxation and connection. Our extended travel plans required meticulous preparation, ensuring all our on-call services, such as drug and alcohol testing, were fully operational, allowing us to enjoy the day worry-free.

The day began in the car park, where Rachel Eden, the mastermind behind the whole event, gathered us for a warm welcome and a run-through of the day’s plans. Rachel was positively beaming, fresh from receiving her excellent exam results (huge congratulations again, Rachel!).

Energised and ready to go, we split into two groups for the morning activities. Half the team began with nature bathing, a calming 45 minutes of quiet connection with the natural world, guided by the “5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique” to help us stay present and mindful. The other half tapped into their creative sides with an oil painting session, producing an array of beautiful, unique works that proved we have more than a few hidden artists in the team. Then we swapped over, giving everyone the chance to enjoy both experiences before lunch. Whether it was the stillness of the water and land or the splash of colour on a canvas, the morning left us feeling relaxed, inspired, and reconnected.

Lunchtime took us back to the welcoming Glen Café, where steaming bowls of homemade soup, freshly made sandwiches, and irresistible cakes awaited us. The team there truly went the extra mile, catering to every preference, vegan, gluten-free, and everything in between, all accompanied by yet another round of their excellent tea and coffee. Now, something Erin Ford would want us to mention… the moment she spotted vegan cheesecakes on the menu, she didn’t even hesitate, she ordered two straight away and with a little help from Simon, enjoyed every bite.

The afternoon turned up the fun factor with our hire of the Wild Dook Sauna. First up, Mhairi Burnett took us through a health and safety briefing, and, with us being in the health and safety realm ourselves, of course, we were in our element. Clipboards metaphorically at the ready, we soaked it all in before heading off to the real action. We rotated through paddle boarding, water dipping, ping pong, bocce, and, of course, the sauna itself, all made even better by wrapping up afterwards in our brand new Genesis-branded towels. And just when we thought the day couldn’t get more memorable, two RAF fighter jets soared overhead as we were drying off, the perfect, unexpected finale.

This year’s wellbeing day felt different, less about competition, more about slowing down, reconnecting, and simply enjoying each other’s company. We took time to reflect on our company values, share laughs, and appreciate the incredible team we have.

A big thank you to everyone who made it possible, and to those who joined in, especially Iain and Gavin, who embraced their first wellbeing day in true Genesis style. We appreciate your participation and the energy you brought to the day. Sadly, Rebecca, Tracy, and Emily couldn’t make it, but hopefully they’ll be with us next time. And we won’t have to wait long for that next big get-together. September marks our 20th anniversary celebrations, and we’re ready to make it another milestone to remember.

Here’s to carrying the laughter, connection, and calm of this day into everything we do for the rest of the year. St Mary’s Loch, you reminded us to pause, breathe, and truly enjoy the people we work alongside.

If you’d like more information on how to host your own team’s wellbeing day, or are interested in any of our wellbeing training courses, we’d be happy to help. Please get in touch with us on our contact page– we’d love to share ideas and support your team’s journey to better wellbeing.

Migraines in the Workplace: How Occupational Health Services Can Help

In this post, Lisa McMurdo, our Occupational Health Nurse, explores how migraines in the workplace affect employees’ quality of life and work performance.

Migraines, the third most prevalent disease globally, are a significant concern, affecting over 10 million people in the UK—approximately one in seven individuals. Each year, migraines contribute to the loss of about 43 million days of work or school in the UK, costing the economy nearly £9 billion. Despite their significant impact, migraines remain poorly understood.

Migraines are more than headaches; they are a chronic neurological condition that can severely affect an individual’s quality of life and work performance. With one in seven people in the UK experiencing migraines, this is a common workplace concern. Employers must recognise the impact of migraines and understand how occupational health services can support affected employees.

Understanding Migraines and Their Workplace Impact

Migraines typically present as severe, throbbing pain on one side of the head, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light and sound. These episodes can last from a few hours to several days, making it challenging for sufferers to manage work responsibilities due to their unpredictable nature.

In the workplace, migraines can significantly reduce concentration, cause memory problems, and impair cognitive function, hindering job performance. Frequent migraine attacks can lead to significant absenteeism, disrupting workflow and team dynamics. Furthermore, employees may attend work despite experiencing migraines, leading to suboptimal performance and a higher risk of errors.

How Occupational Health Services Can Help

Support from Occupational Health (OH) is crucial in creating a supportive work environment for employees with migraines. Here are several ways in which we here at Genesis OHS can help assist:

  • Fitness for Work Assessments: Our Occupational Health Nurses conduct thorough evaluations to assess the severity and frequency of an employee’s migraines and their impact on job performance. They provide personalised recommendations, including reasonable work environment or schedule adjustments.
  • Workplace Adjustments: Simple adjustments, such as employers providing a quiet, dimly lit area for recovery during an attack, can have a substantial impact and can make a significant difference. Offering flexible working hours or the option to work from home during migraine episodes helps employees manage their condition without compromising productivity.
  • Stress Management Programs: Stress is a common trigger for migraines. OH can implement stress management workshops and resilience training to help employees cope with work-related stress.
  • Regular Monitoring and Support: Provide ongoing support and regular check-ins to monitor the employee’s condition and the effectiveness of workplace adjustments. Open communication between employees and management ensures that new issues or needs are promptly addressed.

Under the Equality Act 2010, migraines can be considered a disability if they have a substantial and long-term adverse effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. Employers have a legal obligation to make reasonable adjustments to support employees with disabilities, including those with chronic migraines. This is not just a moral duty but a legal one.

The Benefits of Supporting Employees with Migraines

Failure to support employees with migraines can lead to increased absenteeism, reduced productivity, and potential legal issues. By leveraging occupational health services, employers can create a more inclusive and productive workplace, benefiting both the employee and the organisation.

For more information on how we here at Genesis OHS can help you manage migraines in the workplace, please call our team at 01387 248811 or email info@genesisohs.co.uk to discuss further.
